Although lighting your kerosene stove may seem like a complicated endeavor, learning to it is as easy as taking a few simple steps. To use the Garrett Wade kerosene stove, you’ll first need to make sure that the stove is ready to be lit. Do this by checking to make sure that the stove has fuel in it. You’ll want to use kerosene or lamp oil.
After checking for fuel in the lamp, you’ll need to fill the spirit cup with denatured. While denatured works best, rubbing alcohol will also work in your stove. Another option is Esbit solid fuel. Light the spirit cup and protect it from wind so that your flame stays in the flame ring.
Once your flame goes through the flame ring and it starts to grow, you can close the air valve and begin pumping on the bottom of the stove. If you get a flare-up during this, open the air valve and allow the flames to die down.
If there are no flareups, your top burner will begin to take on the appearance of a gas-powered stove. Use the air valve to adjust the size of the flames. Opening the air valve will release pressure and can lower the flame. When you are done cooking, open the air valve and allow the flame to die out completely.
Once you’ve learned the simple steps to operating the kerosene stove, you’ll be able to use it regularly. They are easy to use and can last for many years!
