In October 2014 the Defence Acquisitions Council DAC, chaired by defence minister A K Antony, decided on a plan worth over Rs 50,000 crore to add six new-generation submarines to the Indian Navy fleet. They titled the project as Project-75 India P-75I. It was also reported that the contract for construction of these 6 submarines would be awarded under "Strategic Partnership" policy
Deliveries of the first Project 75 I class submarines are likely only after 2020.
All the six new submarines has to be equipped with air-independent propulsion AIP systems. The advanced air-independent propulsion AIP systems will enable the submarines to stay submerged under water for longer duration and substantially increase their operational range. Conventional diesel-electric submarines have to surface every few days to get oxygen to recharge their batteries.
These submarines will also have land-attack capability and other technologies to boost their operational capabilities.
The responses by the Original Equipment Manufacturers OEM opened by the Indian Navy included:
DCNS or Naval Group of France which is already involved in the `Scorpene’ submarine for the Indian Navy under Project-75 offered Super Scorpene design
Navantia of Spain has offered Spanish S-80 (Issac Peral class)
TKMS of Germany offered Type 218 (Invincible Class) and Foxtrot
Rosboronexport of Russia for the Amur. A version of Amur-1650
Fincantieri from Italy offered S-1000 design
South Korean company Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering 212 HDW
Swedish defence major SAAB also participated but later pulled out of the contest and the decision was made due to the requirements regarding the time schedule and the requirements related to the Strategic Partnership policy.
Now, the latest update is that after Sweden’s SAAB, another foreign firm is likely to exit Navy’s submarine project. When the sources tried to contact them, the input which they gave was that they will have to wait and see how things evolve since it has been going on for 10 years so the firm has decided to exit the project. They were not interested to reveal their name for now so we are not sure which foreign OEM is pulling out of this project.
