The final event was about #Planet. Valentina Bosetti, Climate Change Economist at Bocconi University, led the last day of meetings and discussions starting with a simple, yet deeply true statement: #climateChange "is something we all live with".
Its consequences concern the very survival of the #Earth but even more so of people. Francesca Gambarini from Corriere della Sera read a message on this topic by Filippo Grandi, UNHCR Italia, Agenzia ONU per i Rifugiati High Commissioner for Refugees. Climate change, along with conflicts, is one of the causes that in recent years has driven more than 82 million people around the world to flee their homelands.
During the afternoon, at Corriere della Sera’s Buzzati Hall, #nature was at the center of the discussion. "Fifty-eight trillion dollars: nature has more than just a spiritual, intangible and symbolic value. More than half of the world's gross domestic product (GDP) is derived from nature," says Ariela Caglio, Professor of Accounting at Bocconi University. "To truly integrate environmental #sustainability and the promotion of #ecosystem regeneration into business strategies and decision-making processes, companies must recognize that nature is a stakeholder in its own right." The event saw the participation of Anna Puccio, Managing Director of B Lab Italia; nature philosopher, Paolo Vidali; and Sanda Ojiambo, Assistant Secretary-General at United Nations Global Compact.
Pact4Future’s last event in the Bocconi Aula Magna was a real journey around planet Earth. With Roberta Boscolo (World Meteorological Organization), the focus was on the phenomena underlying climate change, followed by a dive into the #oceans and a flight into #space. As Stefano Pogutz (Professor of Corporate Sustainability at SDA Bocconi), Riccardo Farina (The Ocean Cleanup), Simonetta Di Pippo (Director of the Economy Evolution Lab at SDA Bocconi), Brent Sherwood (BS Consults) and Luca Rossettini (D-Orbit) explained, the very survival of planet Earth depends on how we are able to promote the blue and space economies.
To conclude, we had the chance to talk with the commander and pilot of #AxiomMission3, Michael Lopez-Alegria and Walter Villadei, who shared their stories and experiences with all the participants. "Space changes you. It's very emotional." From there, Earth is big like an apple, and its peel is like our atmosphere. "You realize that we are all crew members on the same spaceship called 'Planet Earth', of how fragile it is. We need to take care of it and each other a little bit better."
