Satellite analysis shows that the water level of China's Three Gorges Dam exceeded the warning level in the past. A remote sensing analysis found that at the end of 2018 and 2019, the water level of the Three Gorges Dam had risen to dangerous water levels. For years, supporters have claimed that climate change will have little or no impact on the basin and its citizens.
Measured by installed capacity, China’s Three Gorges Dam is the world’s largest power station and is hailed by its supporters as an engineering miracle. Hydropower has become and remains the largest renewable energy source in China. As of the end of 2018, China has celebrated the 40th anniversary of historic economic reforms, with an installed capacity of 352 GW
Last week, reported water levels at the dam’s reservoir surged almost 20 meters higher than the official warning level. Now, findings from a satellite analysis suggests that alarming water levels occurred before, and previous interventions may have failed. Analysts at satellite imagery firm SpaceKnow argue that water levels appeared stable in August and are now slightly decreasing, this is in-line with findings by the Changjiang Water Resources Commission, which announced that water levels began receding last Saturday.
