Remote online notarization (RON) is becoming increasingly accepted, with more than half the states enacting permanent laws authorizing the practice. For more information, please see the Notary Bulletin: [ Ссылка ]

While requirements and procedures vary from state to state, here’s a step-by-step description of a typical process.

1. The signer contacts a RON service provider or Notary.

2. The signer’s document is sent to the Notary so it can be signed and notarized. Typically, the document is uploaded to the RON platform in an electronic format such as PDF.

3. The signer’s identity is screened according to the requirements of the state where the Notary is commissioned. For example, the signer may need to answer questions based on the signer's personal and credit history, called "Knowledge-Based Authentication." Or they may need to submit their ID card to an electronic examination called "credential analysis.” Or the signer may need to hold up their card for the Notary see. Depending on state laws, more than one identification procedure may be required.

4. During the remote notarization, the Notary and the signer communicate via webcam or similar online audiovisual technology. The Notary and signer do not meet face to face.

5. Once the signer’s identity has been verified, both the signer and the Notary must sign the document and the Notary’s seal attached. For electronic documents, both will sign the document electronically, and the Notary will attach their electronic seal.

6. The Notary records any required information for the Notary’s journal records. Most states also require the Notary to retain an audio-video recording of the notarization session.

7. The remotely notarized document is returned to the signer.
