In prehistoric internet times, unexpected, genre-crossing mashups often held shock value, surprise, and delight. Today, that once mind-blowing power is gone having evolved into meme-y novelties mostly done for laughs.
But years ago, I made mashups and my approach was a little different. Taking inspiration from 2manyDJs and DJ Falcon (not Girl Talk), I would use elements of well-known club songs and combine vocals or synths to make something slightly distinct but not jarring. Taking the best parts from mostly similar tracks and fashioning them into something new.
MSHD is a compilation of ten mashups covering the indie, nu-disco, and house sounds I loved and played in many late 2000s DJ sets. While the fad is pretty much dead now, I wanted to give these tracks a proper send off as part of a greater cataloging of older work I'm releasing throughout 2021. Even if we are now in a post mashup world, MSHD brings a little life back into the sound.
