M-1, more commonly known as Woodward Avenue, is a north–south state highway in the Metro Detroit area of Michigan. Originally part of the Saginaw Trail, believed to be created by migrating bison, the trail was used by at least 4 different indigenous tribes for seasonal hunting and fishing. Woodward Avenue was created after the Great Fire of 1805. Then in 1816 Michigan Territorial government authorized the building of a road from Detroit to Saginaw along the trail.
Aside from the automotive culture taking root along the 13 miles of Michigan's road and having the distinction of being the first street where a ticket was written for street racing, Woodward Avenue is also known for housing the first headquarters and recording studio of Motown, nicknamed "Hitsville, U.S.A." Purchased by Berry Gordy in 1959, Gordy converted the house and used it as Motown's headquarters until the mid 1970s when Gordy moved the label to Los Angeles, California. Today, the “Hitsville U.S.A” property operates as the Motown Museum, which is dedicated to the legacy of the record label, its artists, and its music. The museum occupies the original house and an adjacent former residence.
