For the first time in Israel, a tricuspid valve was implanted with a catheter in a 12-year-old boy - an operation that until now could only be performed surgically.
The life-saving operation was performed on a 12-year-old boy, a resident of Gaza, who suffered from a birth defect that caused severe heart failure that endangered his life, therefore he was not a candidate for surgical valve replacement.
The operation was carried out by a multidisciplinary team from the Cardiology Department at Safra Children's Hospital and was also made possible thanks to the "Shevet Achim" association.
Dr. Sharon Borik Chiger, Head of Pediatric Cardiac Cathterization at Safra Children's Hospital at Sheba:
"Due to the child's difficult condition, heart surgery was too dangerous, so the only option was to implant a prosthetic valve with catheterization. With catheterization, the valve is implanted while the heart is working regularly and without the need for open heart surgery. The child breathed on his own at the end of the operation and returned to walking in the ward the next day. His general and cardiac condition immediately improved, and he is a candidate for release to his home and finally began to smile."
"By combining a leading team of experts, which in this case included our collaboration with Prof. Victor Guetta, Director of the Invasive and Interventional Cardiology Unit at Sheba, we manage to give our patients the best result and the most advanced treatment in the world. The procedure that we performed for the first time in Israel, and for the first time in Israel in a child, takes us another step forward in breaking the boundaries of Pediatric heart disease treatment. Thanks to this action, we will be able to respond to a large proportion of patients and allow them to return to an active and healthy lifestyle."
