Because, worldwide, a woman is killed by her partner or family member every 12 minutes.
One in three women will be beaten or sexually abused in their lifetime,
and up to half of sexual assaults reported are committed against girls under the age of 16.
More than 200 million women and girls have experienced female genital mutilation.
That’s about the same as the populations of the UK, France, Spain, Switzerland and Portugal combined.
Each year 15 million girls are married as children often to much older men.
That’s about 30 times more than the number of people who get married in England and Wales.
This is unacceptable and needs to stop.
