One of the biggest difficulties people have in understanding winching loads is how a snatch block can double the force on an anchor. How, they ask, can you "create weight" ? I used to explain this with a whiteboard, but there was always one or two people who refused to believe the numbers. So I put together a little kit to physically demonstrate the point using scales and a volunteers from the audience. Nobody argued with the point then, and it was mildly amusing to see their mental cogs shifting without a clutch!
