Les Cloches (1685) Nicolas Lebègue (1631-1702)
Born in Laon, Lebègue soon made his way to Paris where he established himself as a popular organist, remaining at Saint-Merri from 1664 until his death; successful as an organ consultant as well as a composer, with five published collections of which the third contains Les Cloches. He developed the stylised combinations of organ colours that were to become the hallmark of the French classical organ school, and followed Louis Couperin in composing préludes non mésurés, where the notes are given but the timing and interpretation are entirely up to the performer.
