The family of Chinese 14-year-old diving, Quan Hongchang, has turned down all the prize money she was offered after winning gold in 10-meter diving at the Tokyo Olympics. The public, learning about Hongchan's main motivation to compete, offered her property and cash - £ 30 million.
Hongchan was born and raised in Guangdong Province, southern China, where her father works as an orange farmer. After interviewing the athlete, a local hospital offered to provide a full range of medical services to her mother and sick grandfather. She was also asked to provide a home, a bonus, free life passes for her and family members to amusement parks, zoos and resorts. She was also offered an unlimited supply of her favorite delicacy - a spicy snack made from wheat flour and chili.
However, Wenmao, the father of the Olympic champion, turned down all offers.
“I thank them for coming. But I did not take anything. I did not take a penny, ”he said three days after his daughter won gold in the Olympics.
After the athlete's triumph, fans flocked to her home village to take a look at Quan's house. Crowds wreaked havoc in the village, and streamers climbed trees planted outside her house to pick jackfruit as a souvenir. As a result, the general public is no longer allowed to visit the neighborhood of the house due to concerns that it could become a covid hotspot due to large groups of people.
