To Molly
Do not demand that the poet sing
when daily cares
close his prophet mouth
to joy and inspiration.
If a dazzling power
forces a sepulchral silence on feelings,
no song can arise any more, no, only groans,
and the weeping of women or wild bursts of laughter.
But if, smothering your pride,
you go forth to meet him
and share in his fate,
whether in play or pretence,
his words will burst out like a tumultuous river,
brighter than lightning, hotter than fire,
and sonorous songs, loud songs
will fill heaven more mightly than thunder.
