Our body is amazing the way it cleans out the lungs and removes particles and foreign pathogens like viruses and bacteria.
We have a process called the mucociliary escalator. The airways produce mucus which sits on top of hairs called cilia, which that beat backwards and forwards to help transport the mucus up to the throat to be swallowed or coughed out. The mucociliary escalator captures up to 90% of all foreign particles which we breathe into our lungs. Most people actually swallow between 20-30 ml of mucus per day as a part of the foreign particle clearance process. This process helps to remove particles, viruses and bacteria out of the lungs at a speed of between 1-3cm per minute.
The problem is that sometimes our lungs are bombarded with a large number of particles like smoke, pollution, bacteria or viruses over a long period of time.
This may lead to an excess amount of mucus creation, the mucus becomes contaminated and changes colour from a clear fluid through to yellow, light green and then dark green. This is an indication that our lungs aren’t coping with the amount of pathogens and particles which we are breathing into our lungs and the lungs are infected.
This results in a build-up of mucus which makes it harder to transport and can result in further inflammation, blockages in the air ways and mucus plugs.
This is where AirPhysio comes in. AirPhysio helps to remove the contaminated mucus, the blockages and improve mucociliary transportation.
