A protected class refers to a variety of different characteristics that Congress has decided should be protected from discrimination. So, common examples of this include: a person's gender, a person's race or ethnicity, their national origin, their religion, and in certain cases, where it's a person's gender identity or sexual orientation, that is an ongoing, emerging issue in courts about the scope of protection for those type of characteristics.
