Police are increasingly using AI models to predict crime, leading some to worry about algorithmic bias and the scope of state surveillance. But Ishanu Chattopadhyay and his UChicago colleagues have shown how these models can track the state’s own behavior, shedding light on the inequitable allocation of police resources. Chattopadhyay discusses the power and challenges of AI in law enforcement.
