Comparison between a Fender Stratocaster and a G&L Tribute S-500. Both guitars were made in Japan in the mid to late 1990s.
Both guitars recorded in Cakewalk with a Yamaha THR10II amp and interface. All amp settings are identical throughout the video ("Special" amp model with gain at 3:00, master at 2:00, all EQ at 12:00, and echo/reverb about halfway).
I used the guitar volume knobs to adjust the gain levels rather than adjusting the amp or using a boost or OD pedal.
Also, there is no post-production other than mixing the levels.
Here are the specs:
G&L Tribute S-500 (Made in Japan):
Mid-1990s Japan-made G&L with the USA MFD pickups in all positions. Maple fretboard. The neck feels a little flatter and thinner than the Fender and the frets feel medium jumbo to me. All original except for new saddles and a brass nut. I've had trouble finding info about who G&L contracted to build these in the 1990's. Please leave a comment if you have any info!
Intro at 0:08 - position 4 (neck/middle pickups) with the guitar volume rolled back about halfway
Position 4 (neck/middle pickups) solo at 1:30 - same amp settings (guitar volume dimed)
Position 1 (bridge pickup) solo at 1:57 - same amp settings (guitar volume dimed)
Fender Strat (Crafted in Japan):
This is the Hendrix-style 68 reissue model with the oversized headstock and bold Fender logo. Texas Special neck and middle pickups and a Duncan Hot Rails in the bridge. Floyd Rose Pro trem (which I currently have blocked). Maple fretboard. Neck is a little fatter than the G&L and the frets feel more vintage to medium sized. Based on the serial number, this guitar was likely built by Tokai between 1996-1999.
Intro at 3:10 (neck/middle pickups) with the guitar volume rolled back about halfway
Position 4 (neck/middle pickups) solo at 4:30 - same amp settings (guitar volume dimed)
Position 1 (bridge pickup) solo at 5:00 - same amp settings (guitar volume dimed)
