Knowing how much chlorine to add to your pool can be challenging. /by using the dosage chart I provide here I hope this will help eliminate some confusion. The packages off some insight but they all are based on 10,000 gallons of water and unless your pool is exactly 10,000 gallons of water you are left scratching your head.
You will need to know how much water is in your pool first so you can watch one of these two videos on measuring your pool volume:

You also need to have a minimum of 30 ppm of Conditioner in your pool to protect the chlorine from the Sun's UV rays. If you have too little Conditioner this will not be effective. Here are some videos on Conditioner levels:

Sodium Hypochlorite 10% (liquid chlorine)......................................12.8 fl. oz.
Sodium Hypochlorite 12% (liquid chlorine) .....................................10.6 fl. oz.
Household Bleach 5.7%................................................................ 21.0 fl. oz
Trichchloro-s-triazinetrione 67% (Trichlor shock)...................................2.4 oz
Calcium Hypochlorite 65% (Cal-hypo) ................................................. 2.0 oz.
Calcium Hypochlorite 70% (Cal-hypo)...................................................1.9 oz.
Lithium Hypochlorite 28%................................................................... 4.7 oz.
Lithium Hypochlorite 35%....................................................................3.8 oz.
Dichloroisocyanurate 56% (Dichlor).................................................... 2.38 oz.
Dichloroisocyanurate 62% (Dichlor).....................................................2.15 oz.
Trichloroisocyanurate (Trichor Tablets) ................................................1.5 oz.
The basic formula is four steps:
Step one: In box one write the ppm increase you want
Step two: In box two write your pool gallons divided by 10,000 gallons
Step Three: find your type of chlorine on the chart above and how much of it is needed to raise the level by 1 ppm -write that number in box 3
Step Four: Multiply box 1 x box 2 x box 3 = _________
In the example in the video: 2 ppm x 2.2 x 10.6 fl oz. = 46.64 fl. Oz of 12% liquid chlorine

For shocking you follow these steps:
Step one: In box one write your pool gallons divided by 10,000 gallons
Step Two: In box two write the amount it would take to raise the chlorine by 10 ppm found in the chart above
Step three: Multiply box 1 X box 2 = ________
Example here: 22,000 gallon pool
2.2 x 106 f.l oz. = 233.20 fl. Oz. of 12% liquid chlorine or 1.8 gallons (128 fl. Oz. in a gallon)
The Trichlor Tablets are a bit more challenging. You will just have to play with the amount until you achieve a good balance of 1.5 -3.0 ppm. Once you get it down you will know how many to add each week.
