The Senior Officials are meeting from 08-09 July 2024 at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka, Republic of Zambia, ahead of the meeting of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Ministerial Committee of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation to be held on 11-12 July 2024.
The meeting was chaired by Ms. Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen, Permanent Secretary– International Relations and Cooperation and Chairperson of the Committee of Senior Officials for the SADC Ministerial Committee of the Organ.
Ms. Gundersen highlighted that the SADC region continues to enjoy relative peace and security notwithstanding the pockets of vulnerability and insecurity that the region is still grappling with, including the situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where the negative Forces continue to pose a threat to peace.
She called on SADC Member States to remain seized with emerging developments in the region which have the potential to erupt into conflict situations if left unchecked, such as the persistent energy crisis and the drought situations which are impacting directly on food security.
As part of the agenda, the meeting of Senior Officials will consider matters arising from the Interstate Defence and Security Committee (ISDSC), enabling the Senior Officials to comprehensively appreciate the prevailing security situation in the region, as well as the emerging threats to peace and security.
The SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation was established in 1996 with the overall objective of promoting peace and security in the SADC region.
