Devils Club (Oplopanax Horridus) is one of the west coast elders of the forest. A member of the Ginseng family this plant is considered a powerful ally in the shamanic traditions of the coastal Salish cultures. It is steeped in a rich history of ritual use for protection, potency and vision questing.
Herbalists regard it as an "adaptogen" using it with hypoglycaemia, diabetes, stress management, rheumatism, respiratory ailments and more.
Those that spend time in the west coast forests learn to respect this plant as after the first encounter with its spines it is clear that devils clubs armour is not just for show.
The ecosystems it grows in are sensitive and one should be aware NOT to over harvest. This plant though does have the ability to re-grow from the stems of its fallen warriors, and so done ethically harvesting can be sustainable.
Best to harvest in the spring after the ground thaws and leaves are full and open, or in the fall after the fruit has finished and before the frost. Many traditions believe that the spirit shifts after the frost and it should not be picked at this time. The Root Bark should be peeled and prepped for drying or tincturing with in 48 hours of harvest.
Beads can be easily made with the root stock, as the centre is pithy and easily removable (Check out the ones Yarrow is wearing in this video.)
If you find yourself around this plant. Sit with it a while, listen to its songs, and offer your respect, for Oplopanax has many gifts to offer its students and allies.
