When it comes to packaging there are few options available for winemakers. Most wine is sold to the consumer in glass bottles and labeled with paper labels. In wine’s history, there was also only one real option when it came to sealing the bottle: cork!

When glass bottles became more widely used in the 17th century a new form of closure was also required. First people started using glass stoppers but then cork stoppers were introduced.
The first corks were just pushed halfway into the opening of the bottle but then corks were completely inserted into the bottle to make the seal tight and another important wine invention was made: the corkscrew
