We can learn from our mistakes, and we can take lessons from other places - like engineering - to better understand where we've gone wrong in our reef tanks. Stuff happens, pumps break, we loose power at just the wrong time - the result is the same... a near total tank crash. Dead coral. Maybe even dead fish.

If your reef tank is suffering from a crash, it's really hard to see a path forward. Hang in there, and soon you'll be on the path to recovery. It's a chance to do better, to start again with the knowledge you've got now. Your reef tank can recover from its crash, even if you've lost most everything, just give it time. You can rebuild.

We can take a moment to think about what went wrong leading up to the problem. What can we do differently? Maybe we should have done some more maintenance on our pumps. Maybe we didn't have a battery backup for one of our Vortechs to keep water moving in the case of a power outage. There's always something - so take a moment to think about your case and find what it is for you.

Then, how can we make it so that cascade of problems can never happen again? More rigor in our tank equipment maintenance. A battery backup or generator. Maintenance on that generator. Figure out what would have actually changed the outcome, and that's what you should do going forward. If you stick with it, your reef tank won't crash again... at least not for that reason.
