한미일 외교장관 런던서 회동...정의용·모테기 첫 대면
The top diplomats of South Korea, the U.S. and Japan met in London today... on the sidelines of the G7 meeting of foreign ministers... to discuss regional issues.
With more, we have our foreign ministry correspondent Yoon Jung-min on the line.
Jung-min, walk us through today's three-way meeting.
Sure, Devin.
Just a few hours ago in London, South Korean Foreign Minister Chung Eui-young sat down with his U.S. counterpart Antony Blinken and his Japanese counterpart Toshimitsu Motegi.
Sources say the three discussed issues in the Pacific region, including North Korea.
It's widely believed that they exchanged views on the new U.S. policy on North Korea, now that the Biden administration has completed its review.
Washington has been stressing the need for cooperation with Seoul and Tokyo to bring Pyeongyang back to table for denuclearization.
Also discussed would have been issues related to China, as the U.S. is keenly focused on working with its allies in Asia to counter China's rise.
On other issues, it's believed that they talked about cooperation on tackling COVID-19 and climate change.
This was the first time that the South Korean foreign minister has met with his Japanese counterpart since taking office in February... as ties became strained over historical issues and other matters.
And according to sources in London, Chung met Motegi seperately right after the trilateral meeting apparently to discuss historical issues and the North Korea nuclear issue.
Back to you, Devin.
