Watchet is a seaport on the Somerset coast of the Bristol Chanel with over 1000 years of history. From Celtic origins, its Saxon Mint and raids by the Danes grew a medieval town with a cloth industry and market. By the 19th century there were foundries, sawmills, shipbuilding yard, a paper mill and other trades and shops. In the 1860s the harbour was enlarged and a lighthouse erected on the west pier. Part of the harbour was rebuilt after being destroyed by a gale in 1900, and in July 2001 the new marina was opened. The new East Quay art centre opened in 2021 can be seen during this tour.
