So, I woke this morning to an email from a young man named Andrew who recently took the brave steps of coming out to his family. Sadly they didn't except him into their 'world.' Their is nothing worse then being honest with whom you are and other not accepting that from you. I was taken back from his story and his courage.
Andrew is not the first gay teenager whom has emailed me regarding coming out, but was the first person who emailed by a family who has now disowned him and it touched me deeply.
Many performers say not to get invested in peoples lives, by the letters they write you, but I find it hard not to. I see myself in many of you and when you write me, with your heart on your sleeve, its hard not to feel an emotional connection to that.
I was in the studio today, finishing the mixing and mastering for the new song and decided, since I had a few minutes free while my engineer cleaned up some vocal lines, that I would do a new blog and sing a song that I wrote the day that I came out to my family.
Not everyone is excepting. It takes time for many parents to reprogram the 'dream' they have for their child to a new direction. Some parents take time to accept this new information and some find it hard to accept at all.
I am very fortunate to have parents that have accepted me for whom I am, but it wasn't always like that. It didn't start that way and this song was written within an hour after I came out to my mother.
I hope it helps not only Andrew but others whom may be going through this situation.
