An i3 owner who recently privately purchased a 2013 BMW i3 decided to bring the car to us as it experienced a severe drivetrain problem - the car would start and no warning messages were present, but it would not move (accompanied by terrible noise).
Cause of the problem? Incorrectly installed transmission with insufficient greasing leading to the splines of the connecting shafts wearing down. Given the tight integration of the components, the entire drive unit (electric motor and transmission) needed replacing. Brand new, the parts alone would cost over £5,700, but we managed to source a used unit for a fraction of that figure.
