Thousands of Haitians protested Monday in the capital of Port-Au-Prince over Canada and the U.S. sending military and police supplies to ostensibly combat gangs that have been a cause of the humanitarian crisis in the country.
U.S. and Canadian military aircraft arrived Saturday to deliver tactical and armoured vehicles and other supplies to the Haitian National Police to help combat criminal gangs.
Many in the protests denounced the decision to send more military and police supplies into the country.
"No to the Canadians, no to the Americans," an unidentified protester told Reuters. "You are chaos, you are behind the gangsterization of crime, you are giving arms to our brothers and those who are in underprivileged neighbourhoods."
The UN Security Council on Monday also raised concerns over the devolving situation in Haiti, with U.K.'s representative, James Kariuki, saying they were "deeply concerned" and "perpetrators of gang violence must be held to account."
The U.S. and Mexico have said they would seek support from the UN for a security mission to restore order.
