Contact sheets are positive prints from a roll of film. It can get more nuanced than that, but that’s the simple explanation. For digital photographers that don’t dabble in film too much, it’s basically like a printout of the thumbnails from a shoot.
This video is a brief introduction to contact sheets, their history, and why they’re cool to look at. The TL;DW if you have the attention span of a goldfish and can’t watch a 4min video is that by looking at a contact sheet, we get to see what the photographer decided to capture as they moved through a shoot and therefore, we get a glimpse into how they were thinking.
