Are you being realistic about your retirement plan?

When gay men talk about retirement, we talk about it as if it’s a long-term vacation. It’s not.

There are currently only 22 LGBTQ-friendly retirement communities in the U.S. Most of the cities and towns where gay men dream of retiring are some of the most expensive cities and towns in the U.S.

Unfortunately, an all-too-common email we get says, “I have nothing saved or invested for retirement. How can I retire tomorrow?” You can’t.

Gay men aren’t following the traditional retirement planning models, and that may be a good thing. Traditional retirement planning requires a lot of impossible assumptions:

-- When you’ll retire
-- Your market return for 40+ years
-- The inflation rate for 40+ years
-- When you’ll die
-- When your partner will die

Rather than the traditional retirement plan of working the 9-to-5, saving money in a 401(k) and then investing in the stock market, Todd Tressider recommends on Queer Money® podcast episode #50 an unconventional method of retirement planning.

The traditional plan of saving and investing as much as you can and then spending as little as you can doesn’t work. Todd’s model for early and effective retirement planning is capitalizing:

-- Stock market investing
-- Business income
-- Real estate investing

These assets can be acquired and your cashflow built early in life and later in life and still provide for a comfortable retirement.

Todd says, “When your cashflow exceeds your expenses, then the number of months [in retirement] is infinite and therefore you’re infinitely wealthy.”
