A 3 day backpacking trip from Silverton to Lake City quickly went sideways when we were caught caming in a severe mountain thunderstorm in exposed terrain. We never finished and instead had our dads pick us up at the halfway mark with a rental 4x4 vehicle. While the trip may not have gone as planned, it was still one of the coolest places with the best scenery I've ever been, and I would go back in a heartbeat.
