Here's a question I was recently asked applying the Freestyle Libre Continuous Blood Glucose Monitor (CGM). My take is this after installing the Freestyle Libre and monitoring my "pain":

✅ I've applied the Libre a few times now so I've got experience! I'll be short with the amount of pain I experienced: there is NO pain in the process for me, and I don't feel any object like a needle being inserted into my arm. With a ketone test, the thought of the application is not pleasant for me, because psychologically you're thinking about the process. In this case, there's no problem at all!
✅ You can use the Freestyle Libre with their own app or in combination with the Levels health app. For a link to the Levels app check the resources below.
✅ In New Zealand I can order one of these Freestyle Libre devices without a doctor's prescription. In the US, you need a prescription as of now, unfortunately. I don't know how the process goes in the EU or UK right now, but it's probably different per geographical location.
✅ The Freestyle Libre box contains alcohol wipes, an instruction manual, the applicator, and the sensor itself.
✅ You'll have to open up the boxes so that you can visually see the sensor and applicator.
✅ Before applying anything you'll have to wipe your arm. That process ensures that no viruses, bacteria, or other pathogens enter your body when you're inserting the sensor into your body.
✅ Once the sensor is inserted, it measures your cellular blood glucose levels, NOT your blood glucose levels directly. Both variables are related though, although cellular blood glucose is an imperfect proxy for blood glucose. Nevertheless, if cellular blood glucose is all you have, it's lightyears better than other options.
✅ By inserting the sensor into the applicator, you ensure that the sensor is correctly applied to your arm.
✅ After applying the sensor to your arm, the Libre Freestyle app asks you to connect to the sensor. For that process, you need to bring the phone close to the sensor a few times and they'll sync up. Of course, the process will be similar with the Levels health app!
✅ One last thing worth nothing: the previous sensor I took off my body after 1 week because I got this weird feeling in my triceps. It's probably not the end of the world, and I also did a heavy workout that day, so it's probably not an infection. The odd feeling left the next day.
