We have experimented with using cardboard and tarps to control weeds and kill grass. Both of them work, but we have found the tarp to be an easier method if you can be patient.
Here are the pros and cons of using cardboard:
Pros:
-Biodegrades into soil
-Free resource
-Can add mulch directly on top of cardboard
Cons:
-Weeds can poke through the cracks
-More labor involved

Here are the pros and cons of using a tarp:
Pros:
-Less labor involved
-Weeds can't poke through (using heavy duty tarp)
Cons:
-Costs money to purchase tarp
-Have to wait longer before applying mulch
