한미일 '신공조' 출발 캠프 데이비드 회담 프리뷰
Good afternoon.
The leaders of South Korea, the U.S. and Japan are gathering at Camp David where their trilateral cooperation is set to be taken to a whole new level.
Joining us is Doctor Kim Yang-gyu. Welcome.
Also, Professor Mason Richey. Thanks for joining us.
1. Dr. Kim, let's first talk about the Camp David Principles.
That will revolve around the three sides' commitment to sharpening trilateral cooperation for world peace and prosperity, which will be based on their common values.
What do these principles mean and what do they mean for each of the three sides?
2. Prof. Richey, there's also the Spirit of Camp David, which will lay out their joint statement.
Basically, ringing the bell for a new era of trilateral partnership.
How do you think they will fulfill their vision?
3. Dr. Kim, speaking of extended deterrence, President Yoon said during a written interview with Bloomberg News earlier this week that the three nations are open to separate negotiations.
What does that mean? Does it mean there'll be something like the Nuclear Consultative Group which also involves Japan?
4. Prof. Richey, President Yoon also hinted at sharpening trilateral cooperation on the stronger resilience of their supply chain as well as on advanced and newly emerging technologies like AI and space.
What details can we expect from that plan?
5. Dr. Kim, Seoul's presidential office says one more document like the Principles and the Spirit will be announced.
Any idea what could that be?
A separate one on deterring North Korean threats? What do you think?
6. Prof. Richey, speaking of Camp David
What do we know about this place, and what significance does it hold? Why are talks taking place here?
7. Dr. Kim, China has already expressed discomfort over the trilateral summit.
Why is it bothering Beijing so much this time?
8. Prof. Richey, it looks like the South Korea-U.S.-Japan alliance is getting stronger, and the same goes for North Korea, China, and Russia.
Will these pictures become even clearer after the Camp David summit?
9. Prof. Kim, I hate to stay this, but how likely is it that the North will go ahead with military provocations?
According to Seoul's intel agency, it looks like it's preparing for ICBM launches.
10. Prof. Richey, the three countries are looking to make this trilateral meetup a regular summit, once a year.
Why do you think they'll try to regularize it?
What will it mean for the three sides?
11. Dr. Kim, what's your outlook on the situation here on the Korean Peninsula for the latter half of the year?
(Rocky because of S. Korea-U.S. joint drills scheduled for later this month? North's planned military parade soon?)
12. Prof. Richey, what about you? Also pessimistic? Or can we expect a breakthrough in inter-Korean ties or Washington-Pyongyang relations?
Alright, Dr. Kim Yang-gyu we appreciate your insight this afternoon.
Thank you, Professor Richey for connecting with us all the way from Perpignan.
