As an apprentice many years ago my teacher had me size all the medium or smaller shanked gold rings using my fingers as the third hand. While scary at first, you learn quickly about the differences regarding heat transfer in gold as compared to silver. With silver, you will instantly burn the fingers. Gold should also be worked on with a torch capable of creating a strong oxidizing flame in all flame sizes (small, medium, and large) allowing the user to pinpoint the heat or get in and out quickly if needed.
