It's been 20 years since the problematic "Bringing Down the House" hit theaters. The comedy from writer Jason Filardi and director Adam Shankman starred Steve Martin as a lonely lawyer who thought he had found the perfect date online, played by Queen Latifah, only to find out that she has just escaped prison and only wants him to help prove her innocence.
Some expected race-out-of-water comedy ensues, and according to all three stars of the film (including Eugene Levy), Latifah had to step in multiple times to adjust Filardi's attempt at Black slang and racial humor. So the finished product that hit theaters exactly 20 years ago today could've been even more offensive than some critics had declared at the time.
