Taiwan's Ministry of Justice has started a trial run of "virtual prison visits" in three remote prisons located in Taitung county and the offshore islands of Kinmen and Penghu. It allows video chats between the inmates and their family members using mobile devices. Prison officials say a mobile phone application is specially designed to facilitate the virtual visits. Downloading and registration of the app is only possible after security checks are completed. The session will only commence once the caller's identity is verified.
