(15 Jul 2016) As the US Republican National Convention (RNC) draws near, RNC Committee Chairman Reince Priebus reacted to Thursday's attack in Nice, France, and looked ahead to what voters can expect when the gavel drops in Cleveland.
"I think people are floored by what's going on around the world," he said, adding "I don't even know if people even know what to say about this stuff anymore."
Priebus said there will be plenty of talk at the convention about the Islamic State group (IS), but also said it would be inappropriate to take advantage of the Nice attack for political gain.
He also responded to Thursday's failed effort by a small number of delegates to the nomination of the party's presumptive presidential nominee, Donald Trump.
"We're voting next week on Tuesday or Wednesday," he said.
Regarding an alternative candidate, Priebus said: "Where is this person? If you vote for someone other than Donald Trump, it's a vote for Hillary Clinton."
He added that Trump is trying to build bridges and pivot towards the November election.
"He's really making an effort to put some of these old rivalries to bed," Priebus said.
