VIRGINIA WOOLF (Adeline, nee Stephen; 25 January 1882 – 28 March 1941, aged 59) was an English author and one of the most influential modernist writers of the 20th century. Her works, such as Mrs. Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927), and A Room of One's Own (1929), are renowned for their poetic prose and exploration of themes such as gender, class, and identity. Woolf was born into a privileged family, the daughter of a successful editor and author. She was educated at home and gained access to her father's extensive library from an early age. Woolf began writing professionally in the early 1900s, publishing short stories and critiques in magazines. She was a member of the influential Bloomsbury group, which included her husband Leonard Woolf, a publisher. Woolf's works often examined the role of women in society and sought to challenge the traditional gender roles of the day. She was a passionate advocate for women's rights and her work has been highly influential in the feminist movement. Woolf suffered from mental illness throughout her life and tragically committed suicide in 1941. Her legacy as a writer and social critic continues to inspire readers and scholars today.
