This video shows a low quality of passive matrix DSTN flat panels. You can see Toshiba Satellite 440CDT (TFT) on the left and Apple PowerBook 1400cs/166 (DSTN) on the right. Laptops are about the same age.
Highlights:
1) TFT is far faster because of using transistors for each pixel.
2) DSTN has serious problems with displaying dark shades of gray.
3) DSTN picture is less stable.
Look at this every time you think that you have ugly screen in your modern laptop :)
