(8 Sep 2019) Egyptian and American officials opened to the public two tombs in Draa Abul Naga necropolis in Luxor on Sunday.
The Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mostafa Waziri and the Chargé d'Affaires of the US in Egypt, Thomas Goldberger, were among dignitaries present in Luxor on Sunday.
The two tombs inaugurated in Draa Abul Naga necropolis were tomb 'TT 159' that belonged to Ria from the nineteen dynasty, who was the fourth priest of Amun, and tomb 'TT 286,' which belonged to Niay from the twentieth dynasty, according to Waziri.
Waziri and Goldberger inspected the conservation works at nearby Khonsu temple in Karnak as part of a project implemented by the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE).
ARCE's project in Draa Abul Naga necropolis was mainly aimed at creating jobs for locals who are struggling due to the downturn of Egyptian tourism, in addition to training Egyptian conservators.
According to an US embassy spokesperson, USAID contributed 35 million Egyptian pounds (two million U.S. dollars) to conserve two tombs at Draa Abul Naga and eight chapels at Khonsu Temple at Karnak.
Since 1995, the United states, through USAID, have provided 100 million U.S dollars (90 million Euros) in cultural projects throughout Egypt.
Goldberger hailed the cultural partnership between the US and Egypt and said US investments into projects throughout Egypt have "contributed to understanding and sympathy and common feeling between Americans and Egyptians."
