Welcome to Lucerne! In this video, we'll take you through the city and help you discover everything you need to know before planning your visit to Lucerne. From historic landmarks to breathtaking natural wonders, we'll cover the best spots to visit and activities that will make your trip unforgettable.
Old Town
Our journey begins in the Historic Old Town, the heart of Lucerne. This area is famous for its medieval buildings, colorful wall frescoes, and charming cobblestone streets. Wander through the streets and soak in the vibrant atmosphere of this historic region.
Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke)
While exploring the Old Town, make your way to the iconic Chapel Bridge, or Kapellbrücke. This 14th-century flower-lined wooden bridge, accompanied by the adjacent Water Tower, is one of Lucerne's most recognizable landmarks. The bridge is adorned with paintings that depict historical events, adding a unique touch to your stroll across it.
Kornmarkt and Weinmarkt
Next up are the Kornmarkt and Weinmarkt, two historic squares in the heart of Lucerne's Old Town. Kornmarkt, once a bustling grain market, now hosts the Town Hall and its distinctive octagonal tower, offering a glimpse into medieval times. Weinmarkt, formerly a wine market, is surrounded by beautifully decorated historic buildings. The central fountain, adorned with Renaissance sculptures, is a perfect backdrop for capturing memorable photos.
Dying Lion Monument
Another historic landmark you can't miss is the poignant Dying Lion Monument. This sculpture commemorates the Swiss Guards who died during the French Revolution. Carved into a sandstone rock face, it depicts a dying lion and stands as a symbol of bravery. Mark Twain famously called it "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world."
Musegg Wall and Towers
The Musegg Wall and Towers are remnants of Lucerne's original fortifications. You can walk along the wall and visit its nine towers, four of which are open to the public. Each tower offers a glimpse into the city's medieval past and provides panoramic views over the Old Town and Lake Lucerne.
Lake Lucerne
After exploring the historic sites, take a leisurely stroll along the promenade of Lake Lucerne or hop on a boat cruise. The cruises, ranging from classic paddle steamers to modern yachts, offer a unique perspective of the city and surrounding landscapes. Enjoy dining options on board while taking in the snow-capped mountains reflecting on the calm waters of the lake.
Mount Pilatus
Plan a day trip to the nearby Mount Pilatus, reachable via the Golden Round Trip from Lucerne. This journey includes a scenic cruise on Lake Lucerne, a ride on the world's steepest cogwheel railway, and a final gondola ride to the summit. The panoramic views from the top stretch over the Swiss Alps and as far as Germany's Black Forest.
Mount Rigi
Mount Rigi, known as the "Queen of the Mountains," offers another spectacular experience. Take Europe's first-ever mountain railway from Vitznau or Arth-Goldau to the summit. The train ride provides sweeping views of Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug, and the surrounding Alps. At the top, hike along scenic trails, dine at the mountaintop restaurant, or relax at the Rigi Kaltbad Mineral Baths & Spa.
Hiking Trails
Lucerne's surrounding area is a hiker's paradise. The region is crisscrossed with trails ranging from leisurely walks to challenging hikes. For an easy stroll, explore the picturesque Swiss Path along the shores of Lake Lucerne. For a challenge, tackle the ridge trails of Mount Pilatus or Mount Rigi, where stunning views over the lakes and Alps await.
