Szczecin is the capital city of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship in Poland. Located near the Baltic Sea, it is a major seaport and Poland's seventh-largest city.
Szczecin is located on the Oder, south of the Szczecin Lagoon and the Bay of Pomerania.
Szczecin is the urban centre of the Szczecin agglomeration, an extended metropolitan area that includes communities in the German states of Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
From the Oder river you have a nice view of the Old Town. Most of the medieval buildings in the city center were completely destroyed during World War II. The Ducal Castle can then be seen in the background.
The Ducal Castle was the seat of the dukes of Pomerania-Stettin of the House of Pomerania (Griffins), who ruled the Duchy of Pomerania from 1121 to 1637.
