In this series I try to help the viewer conceptualize dissociation and DID or DDNOS from my understanding- I am a DDNOS stytem 6+ years in healing. In part one I talk about the need for, and process of, dissociating traumatic memories during childhood. The chronic, severe abuse survivors endure at a young age primes the brain for dissociation as a protective mechanism that allows the child to develop as normally as possible, with the events of overwhelming trauma being effectively isolated from conscious awareness. This process results in the formation of distinct parts of the mind that may function both to hold- and perform in future- traumatic situations. Later in life, triggering events or age can erode these dissociative barriers, leading to flashbacks that accompany accessing the abuse content; the subsequent destabilization of the dissociative system is an opportunity to heal the child parts stuck in moments of overwhelming pain and terror.
