Lots of people think they're going to go out, buy a sawmill, cut some boards and make lots of money. I'm here to tell you that won't be happening, unless you have access to trees made of gold. Just sit back and think about it.... First you have to have access to clean, straight logs. Then you need to get them to your property. Which means somebody has to chop them down. And somebody has to transport them. And maybe your bro will drop off free walnut logs every day, but unlikely. Once you get the logs, they're not always perfect.... Some are too long, some have stubs sticking out, and they often need a bit of trimming to be able to work with them on the mill.
So today Peter and I are prepping some 18 foot long poplar logs to get milled into 16.5 foot long fence boards. Our mill can handle 16 foot logs, but not much more. So, we spent some time whacking off the stump ends to make them fence board length. Next we need to get them loaded onto the rack and square them up. I'm hoping we'll get 75 boards out of these.
