STORYLINE
British Prime Minister David Cameron met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf in Kabul on Thursday.
Cross-border fighting and stalled negotiations with the Taliban were the main topics of discussion at the three-way meeting.
Cameron's visit was part of efforts to add British weight to American diplomatic attempts to get Pakistan to become more cooperative in ending the Afghan war.
The British, US and Afghan governments have long criticised Pakistan for not doing enough to stop cross-border attacks.
Many insurgents groups are based in safe havens in Pakistan's lawless tribal areas along the Afghan border.
Islamabad also charges that insurgents cross the border from the Afghan side and attack Pakistani security forces.
Speaking at a joint news conference, Ashraf and Karzai they would work together against the threat of militancy.
Ashraf told reporters that peace in Afghanistan would help his own country's security.
"Pakistan is a part of solution and not part of the problem as far as Afghanistan's peace, security and stability is concerned," he said.
Pakistan is facing its own Islamic insurgency and has been fighting militant groups, mostly in its tribal areas.
Karzai welcomed the discussions between the three countries.
"Let's hope that this round will be one that will be of satisfaction to both countries and will bring better security to both the Afghan people and the people of Pakistan," he told reporters.
