Khor Virap monastery, a short drive from Yerevan, lies on the Ararat plain, in sight of the closed border with Turkey. The monastery has been a pilgrimage site for the Armenian Apostolic Church for centuries. Its position is particularly poignant as it has breathtaking views of snow-capped Mt Ararat, which Turkey seized from Armenia after the Turkish-Armenian war in 1920. Armenians still regard Mt Ararat as a symbol of Armenia and it is depicted on the currency.
Noravank Monastery is over 100km from Yerevan, and is a 13th century monastery that was a major religious and cultural center of Armenia.
You can visit both on a private day trip from Yerevan as part of your #JayWayCaucasus tour
