If food is your way of coping with stress, it won’t be long before that stress eating shows up on your waistline. Stress causes hunger because it affects the hormones in your body.
The main stress hormones come from your adrenal glands, namely cortisol and adrenaline. When you feel stressed, these hormones are sent out into your body to help you feel alert and ready for action. They also cause your blood sugar level to rise, which is both good and bad.
The elevated blood sugar gives you quick energy to deal with the stressful moment. However, after the stressor is gone, your body needs to refill sugar storage, leaving you feeling hungry and craving sweet snacks.
Chronic stress also affects your hunger hormones by reducing leptin (a hunger blocker) and increasing ghrelin (a hunger stimulator). This one-two hormone punch boosts your hunger.
For menopausal women, hunger can be made worse by stress because cortisol interferes with progesterone, which causes estrogen dominance. Symptoms of estrogen dominance include increase cravings for sweets and weight gain.
