The Folgefonna Glacier is located on a peninsula that is washed by the waters of the picturesque Hardangerfjord. Folgefonna is the third-largest glacier in Norway. And it was to him at the end of July that we went on another road trip and adventure with our caravan "Crazy Troll".
On the first day in the late afternoon, we left Fredrikstad and drove through the Oslofjord through the tunnel Oslofjordtunnelen. The purpose of the first day was to stop for the night in front of the mountain pass in Haukeli (Haukelifjellet). Which we did after 5 hours of travel.
From the morning of the second day of the trip, the weather pleased us with a cloudless sky, and nature with bright colors. And we enjoyed the views from the window at an altitude of more than 1000 meters above sea level, passing picturesque mountains and lakes near the E134 road.
And even a detour of the tunnel in the column could not spoil the impression of the beauty. We climbed even higher to the snow itself and gradually winding in tangled turns, the serpentine road descended into the valley of the Oddadalen waterfalls.
It is here that the famous Låtefossen twin waterfall is located which loves to have fun watering cars passing over the bridge. We have already visited Lotefossen before and you can admire it in this video: [ Ссылка ]
This time our goal was the city of Odda. On the one side, it is washed by the waters of Lake Sandvinvatnet, a rich blue color that is given by the meltwater of the Folgefonna glacier. And on the other side is the Sørfjorden.
Odda is a very popular city with tourists. It is located among high mountains and there are many trails and natural beauties around. Also, bright houses on the mountains and winding streets create the very cozy Scandinavian charm that every traveler wants to see.
Directly from the city under the mountain and the glacier is an 11 km long tunnel "Folgefonntunnelen". This takes us to the other side of the peninsula and we continue to our next goal - to Lake Bondhusvatnet.
The lake is located 189 meters above sea level in the Bondhusdalen valley. The Bondhusbrea Glacier hangs proudly over the lake. A unique atmosphere of peace and tranquility reigns here, and only a family of crows breaks the silence with their croaking.
On the way to the southern part of the Folgefonna glacier, near road 551, we stopped to watch the sunset over the fjord near the wide and powerful waterfall Furebergsfossen.
It was getting dark, but our main destination of the trip - the southern (Søndre) and the largest part of the glacier with an area of 167 square kilometers was gradually approaching. Interestingly, it is here that complete unity with nature takes place, and as soon as you turn off the Fv40 road, even mobile communications disappear. So be prepared to navigate by the map!
A narrow road winds between huge glacial lakes, the water from which is used by hydroelectric power plants. We stopped for the night near Lake Blådalsvatnet at an altitude of about 800m.
On the morning of the third day, the weather was gloomy, and thick clouds shrouded the mountains. And although in such weather it is harder to climb the mountains, we still went hiking along the steep slopes overgrown with thick moss and grass. After all, the views of the harsh Norwegian mountains, blue lakes, rivers, and glaciers in such weather are even more breathtaking.
Having overcome a sharp and steep ascent to the mountain, Lake Midtbotnvatnet opened up to our eyes, then we went down to the valley and walked along the Blådalselvi river to the Svelgabreen glacier. And they returned back past the infinitely blue lake Insta Mosevatnet.
You can talk about the beauties of nature around the Folgefonna glacier endlessly, but it’s better to show it once! What we do in our video! :)
By evening, the weather began to deteriorate sharply and we realized that we had to leave the mountains and spend the night on the shore of the fjord in the city of Rosendal.
The next morning, having overcome the fjord through the ferry crossing Årsnes - Gjerdmundshamn, we went for a walk under the Steinsdalsfossen waterfall. We really enjoyed this unusual experience! We recommend it to everyone!
And also on this day, we visited the Lærdals tunnel (Lærdalstunnelen). This is the longest road tunnel in the world. Its total length is 24.5 km. Special highlights of this tunnel are three artificial caves with lighting that mimics daylight. By the way, they have a practical function - they help fight the monotony of traffic through the tunnel and improve control over the concentration of drivers' attention.
Which helped us a lot, because right at the exit of the tunnel we met the Deer and, as we were focused, we noticed him and stopped, and the deer gracefully went into the darkness.
