The Benjamin Franklin Bridge is one of the three major bridges over the Delaware River. This bridge connects the city of Philadelphia (Center City neighborhood) with the town of Camden in New Jersey. NOTE: This is Part 1 of the video. Please click on the link below for Part 2.

This huge suspension bridge was built in 1926 (celebrating the 150 anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence). This bridge carries Interstate 676 and US route 30. There are two pedestrian walkways and a highspeed subway line (PATCO). One of the pedestrian walkways is currently closed because of bridge maintenance on that side (fortunately not the side that has the best views of Philly).
The bridge is about 1.6 miles long and almost 135 feet above the river. The pedestrian entrance to this bridge (Philadelphia side) is right behind the National Constitution Center. It is a gradual climb to the top. I definitely would not recommend walking if you are afraid of heights. In addition to the height, the bridge is very busy and noisy. You will not hear bicyclists and runners getting close to you from behind.
I like to walk from my neighborhood (Rittenhouse Square), cross the bridge and get a nice evening view of the city of Philadelphia from the Camden Waterfront. Camden has a notorious reputation but the waterfront area is fairly safe (but I am from Philly, so who am I to complain!!).
From the bridge itself, the view of the City of Brotherly Love are spectacular. You can see the entire Center City, Fishtown and even Northeast Philadelphia. You can also see all of Camden (including the Rutgers campus) and the Betsy Ross Bridge and the Walt Whitman Bridges.
The Delaware River is very wide at this point. I can understand why George Washington had to cross the river near Trenton in December 1776. The Delaware River is much more narrower near New Hope (PA), where he eventually crossed the river.
