Following a hilarious tirade about teenagers giving up on life too soon, Oakland rapper Kamaiyah talked about her breakthrough hit "How Does It Feel," Drake showing up at her house in the Drakiest way possible and the house party scenes of the good old days on the latest episode of MASS APPEAL's "Open Space."
"You got kids 16, 17, talking about, 'Oh, it didn't work out for me.' What didn't work out? Put in an application!" said Kamaiyah during her opening rant. "Apply yourself." If anyone knows anything about getting it, it's the 25-year-old from Oakland. After generating a sizable buzz on the left coast thanks in part to a feature on E-40's "Petty," Kamaiyah's 'A Good Night in the Ghetto' helped define the potential embedded in California's rap scene, highlighted by her aspirational bop "How Does It Feel."
"Let's just all be real with each other, we're some broke motherfuckers," she says about the record. "How does it feel to be rich? Fuck it."
As if having one of the hottest off-the-radar hits of summer 2016 wasn't enough, Kamaiyah, then not nearly as recognizable as she is now, handled the hook duties on her buddy YG's latest Drake collaboration, "Why You Always Hatin'?" And, naturally, she has a Drake story.
"He just popped up like, 'I'm gonna come through.'" she says of the night Drake showed up at her unfurnished crib at 3 a.m. "It's probably like, just a couch in my house and a TV. Me and my brother just sitting there playing 'Mario Kart,' then Drake comes over and it's like, 'Shit, what the hell?'"
She's hardly done turning up. With Interscope Records providing some wind for her sails, Kamaiyah is prepping her follow-up to 'AGNITG,' led by the new single "Successful," a sequel of sorts to "How Does It Feel."
"We trying to get it cracking," she says.
